Day 1 Luoyang (B, L)

Welcome to Luoyang, one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China! Your local guide will meet you at the train station or the airport and pick you up to your hotel in a private vehicle.

After a break in your hotel, your guide will take you to visit Longmen Grottoes, which contains the largest and most impressive collection of Chinese art of the late Northern Wei and Tang Dynasties (316-907). The UNESCO World Heritage site is densely scattered on the cliffs of Mount Longmen (West Hill) and Mount Xiangshan (East Mountain) - on two banks of Yi River. West Hill houses the major caves with notable displays of Buddhist sculptures and calligraphic inscriptions. The highlights include Bingyang Cave which tells a wealth of history and artistic value, Guyang Cave with over 1,000 Buddha statues and 800 calligraphy inscriptions, and Fengxian Temple - the largest cave with a 17.14-meter-tall sculpture of Vairocana Buddha.

Then, transfer to your hotel in Luoyang.

How to Get to Luoyang? It is available to take a flight to Luoyang from Beijing (2hrs), Shanghai (2hrs), Chengdu (2hrs), Chongqing (2hrs), Guangzhou (2.5hrs), etc., or take a high speed train to Luoyang from Xian (1.5hrs), Zhengzhou (40mins), Beijing (3.5hrs), Shanghai (5.5hrs), Nanjing (3.5 ~ 4hrs), Hangzhou (about 5.5hrs), Chengdu (5.5 ~ 6.5hrs).

Day 2 Luoyang Peony Festival Tour (B, L)

You will start today's trip with a visit to White Horse Temple, about 50 minutes' drive from central downtown. Established in AD 68 of Eastern Han dynasty, White Horse Temple is the first Buddhist temple in China with over 1900 years history. Since then, it spreads the Buddhism throughout China and is regarded as the cradle of Chinese Buddhism. Next, drive back to Luoyang city and visit Luoyang Museum which shows ancient Luoyang from all perspectives. There are more than 1,000 exhibits dating back to the Tang Dynasty (A.D. 618 ~ 907) and even to the earliest prehistoric times (before the 21st century B.C.) in the informative display halls, such as exquisite tri-colored glazed potteries, various bronzeware, ancient clay sculpture, treasured calligraphy and paintings, etc.

Then, pay a visit to Luoyang National Peony Garden, which is grown with more than 600 varieties of domestic peony and 100 varieties of foreign varieties. Strolling in the garden provides you with a visual feast of a sea of flowers. You must be surprised to witness so many stunning peonies in so many colors. Apart from red and pink peonies, you are also able to see some rare colors, like white, yellow, orange, lilac and purple.

Please Note: There are various peony gardens in Luoyang. Every peony garden has different peony flowers with different flowering phase. Usually, the full-blossom period of peony flowers in Luoyang National Peony Garden is April 10th ~ 25th and in Luoyang International Peony Garden is April 20th ~ May 5th. In order to offer you the best sightseeing of peony flowers, the itinerary may be changed according to your travel time.

Day 3 Luoyang - Dengfeng (B)

After breakfast, you will drive about 1.5hrs to Shaolin Temple, the birthplace of Zen Buddhism and the cradle of Kung Fu. You will visit the grandiose temples and halls, admire stone carving art, learn about Buddhism culture, and observe the daily living and meditation of monks in the temple. Don't miss the famous Pagoda Forest, the existing largest pagoda forest in China. When an important monk passed away, their cremains or skeleton would be put into the underground palace, and a pagoda will be built on it. The pagoda's height, size and number of layers will be decided according to the monk's Buddhism knowledge, reputation and merits and virtues during his lifetime. You will also enjoy a magnificent Kung Fu Show in Shaolin Wushu Hall which is performed by martial monks of Shaolin Temple, and usually lasts for half hour each day.

After the Kung Fu experience, drive back to Luoyang or Zhengzhou to catch your train or flight to your next destination.

2. This price is subject to change according your traveling season, group size, hotel class, change of activities in your itinerary and possible fluctuation of currency exchange rate. If you want a lower price, you can get more people to join you, or use economy class hotels.
3. This price is only valid to March 31, 2025.
4. Reference exchange rate of USD 1=RMB 6.85. The final quote is based on current exchange rate. It may change according to the currency fluctuation, while the RMB quotation will be remained the same.

Thanks! I had a weekend away to Xi’an, China to celebrate my birthday. It was an exciting weekend and it was certainly something off the beaten trail for most of my friends. The itinerary you have suggested provided good coverage of the city’s rich history. From the fascinating Terracotta Army to the City Walls to the sacred Mount Hua, to the Muslim Quarter to the Drum & Bell Towers, there’s an interesting story from every historical era in Xi’an. I managed to hike up Mount Hua from North Peak to West Peak, but I didn’t get to do the dangerous plank walk as it was closed.

The hotel Eastern House was very accessible too with food places within steps and its proximity to the Drum Tower is a plus. The room was very clean and comfortable.

At this point, I have to quickly mention our amazing tour guide Betty Jiao Yan who was assigned to us as part of our private tour package. She made our time feel so very special and I wonder if Xi'an would have been as awesome without her. She had such a positive and caring nature and when we had to say goodbye, we felt very sad. It was strange to miss a guide after only knowing her for 5 days! Luckily we still keep in touch on WeChat. Our driver Mr Ma was very polite, punctual and accommodating, making our travel a pleasant experience
