Mount Wutai or Wutaishan is not only one of the holiest Buddhist sites in the Buddhist world, but also an ideal place for hiking. Stepping on this promising land with about 3000 meters elevation to enjoy a one-of-a-kind hiking that combines strong Buddhist culture with picturesque plateau scenery, which you cannot find in elsewhere.

This 3 Days Mount Wutai Trekking tour takes you to hike the most beautiful Five Terraces from East Terrace to South Terrace via North Terrace, Central Terrace and West Terrace. You will be led by a professional hiking guide with a moderate pace.

Know before you go: the best time to trek Mount Wutai is late spring (May), early summer (June) and autumn days from September to October when the weather is more comfortable. It is not recommended to trek Mount Wutai during December to April of next year when the mountain is usually covered by snow, and the temperatures are very low. Whenever you want to trek Mount Wutai, remember to check weather condition beforehand, bring your extra layers and umbrella/raincoat always.

Day 1 Wutaishan Arrival

Welcome to Wutaishan, the home to China’s most scared Buddhist mountain. Our local tour guide will meet you at Xinzhou Wutaishan Airport or Wutaishan Railway Station and escort you to Taihuai Town which is the tourist center of Mount Wutai. The rest time is to explore Buddhist culture in the most influential temples of Mount Wutai - Tayuan Temple, Shuxiang Temple, Xiantong Temple, Pusa Ding Temple which are all convenient located in Taihuai Town.

Tayuan Temple (Pagoda Courtyard Temple) is named after the Great White Pagoda, a symbol of Mount Wutai. This big white pagoda is 75.3 meters high and 83 meters around. It is said there is a stupa of Sakyamuni’s sarira built by ancient Indian King Ashoka and hair of Manjushri inside the Great White Pagoda. Shuxiang Temple (Temple of Manjushri’s Statue) was established in East Jin Dynasty (AD 317~420). It houses the biggest statue of Manjusri Bodhisattva which is nearly 10 meters high. It used to be visited by many ancient emperors and queens. Xiantong Temple is the largest as well as the oldest temple in Mount Wutai. Its Bronze Hall, built in 1610 and made of 50,000 kg bronze, is one of the best preserved bronze halls in China. Pusa Ding Temple (Bodhisattva Summit) is the largest Tibetan monastery in Mount Wutai. It is featured in grand royal-style halls and temples. The ancient emperors in Ming and Qing Dynasties lived in the temple during their pilgrimage to Mount Wutai.

After the temples visit, go to check in to your hotel in Taihuai town and have a good rest for tomorrow’s hiking.

How to Get to Mount Wutai? You can take direct flights to Xinzhou Wutaishan Airport from Shanghai (2.5hrs), Hangzhou (2.5hrs), Chengdu (2.5hrs), etc., or travel to Pingyao from Taiyuan (3hrs), Datong (3hrs) and Pingyao (4hrs) and other places in Shanxi Province with our private car. No matter where you come from and when you arrive, our tour guide and driver will pick up on time.

Day 2 Wutaishan Trekking (B)

Walking distance: about 31km/9~10 hrs; Highest altitude: 3061m

Today, you are going to hike the 4 of the Five Terraces, the five highest peak of Mount Wutai, namely East Terrace, West Terrace, North Terrace and Central Terrace. They are situated at different directions and faraway from each other.

Transfer about 30mins to Hongmenyan where your hike starts. First, hike about 1 hour to East Terrace (2795m). A far-reaching view is rewarded for visitors to East Terrace. On the clear days, you can even see East China Sea. Leaving East Terace and hiking about 3.5 hours along the winding and twisting mountain road to the North Terrace (3061m). North Terrace is the highest peak in Mount Wutai and reputed as the “Ridge of North China”. Here you can have a simple lunch and rest for a while.

In the afternoon, continue your way to Central Peak for 1.5 hours’ walking. Along the way you can see green grassland, gentle herds wondering around. Central Terrace is known for Yanjiao Temple which is believed to be the site where the master Manjusri Bodhisattva used to teach Buddhism. You will then keep hiking about 1 hour to the West Terrace which is also known as Hanging Moon Peak, literally meaning the best location to enjoy bright moon. Lastly hike 2 hours down the West Terrace to Lion Nest Temple. Today’s hiking ends.

Stay overnight in a local guest house near Lion Nest Temple.

Notes: (1) the Five Terraces are all located at high plateaus over 2500 meters. You should prepare well to prevent from high altitude sickness. Avoid strenuous activities like running and jumping and bring some oxygen for emergency use; (2) food offered by the temples are vegetarian and simple. You can bring some snacks; (3) No matter when you hike Mount Wutai, you’d better bring extra layers and umbrella/raincoat always. Comfortable hiking shoes, Light and comfortable pants, Hiking sticks, sun cream, water bottle are all recommended.

Day 3 Wutaishan Trekking & Departure (L)

Walking distance: about 19km/5~6 hrs; Highest altitude: 2463m

This morning you will hike about 4 hours to South Terrace (2489m) along mountain trails. Looking at the shape of the mountain from afar, it is like a strapping horse standing on the mountain. The South Terrace pleases visitors with more than 100 species of rare flowers and plants. In spring, the mountain is filled with red, yellow, blue, white, purple, etc. And during the midsummer, you can see numerous sheep and cows grazing on the mountain. After some leisure time on the South Terrace, you will hike about 2 hours to descent the mountain and get picked by our driver at Fongmu Cave.

After the memorable hiking, it’s time to farewell to Mount Wutai. Our tour guide and driver will escort you to catch your departing flight/train on time. Our service end.
